Every office building falls under both the French Labour Code (article R. 4227-37 et seq.) and, when open to the public, the ERP fire-safety regulation — most often type W (administrations, banks, public-facing offices). In both cases, the employer or operator must post legible evacuation plans on each floor and near every exit.

An evacuation plan compliant with NF X 08-070 (fire-incident instructions) using ISO 7010 pictograms must therefore be displayed in circulation areas, updated after every reshuffle and accompanied by general fire-safety instructions. ISO 23601 governs evacuation and intervention plans for complex buildings.

Beyond the legal requirement, the evacuation plan plays a key role during the periodic evacuation drills imposed by article R. 4227-39 of the Labour Code (at least every six months) and during inspections by the safety commission for ERPs subject to authorisation.
