What is an evacuation plan template?
An evacuation plan template is a pre-structured framework with the regulatory elements (border, legend, ISO 7010 pictograms, "You are here" indicator, emergency numbers) so you don't start from scratch. It serves as a customization base to produce the actual plan posted in your establishment. A good template is both compliant with standards (ISO 23601, NF X08-070, French ERP order of 25 June 1980) and tailored to your activity (retail, industry, school, hotel, hospital, office). Without this dual compliance, the plan can be rejected by the safety commission.
What must a compliant template contain?
NF X08-070 and ISO 23601 define the mandatory elements of any evacuation plan. A template missing any single one is not exploitable.
Border and title block
Plan border, title ("Evacuation Plan"), establishment name and address, level (ground floor, level 1, basement), update date, plan reference. Title block typically placed bottom right or left.
Orientation and scale
A compass rose (North) and a graphical scale (meter ruler) are mandatory. Scale depends on format: 1/100 or 1/200 most common for standard premises.
"You are here" indicator
Specific red pictogram placed exactly at the physical location of the displayed plan. Without it, the plan is unusable under stress. Each posted copy must have its own "You are here" — preventing identical duplication without customization.
ISO 7010 pictograms
Emergency exits (E001, E002), assembly points (E007), extinguishers (F001), hose reels (F002), fire alarms (E006), defibrillators (E010), first-aid kits (E003). All must respect normalized colors and shapes.
Evacuation paths
Drawn in green, with arrows, indicating the shortest path from each zone to the nearest exit. Drawn solid, not dashed. A legend of colors and symbols is mandatory.
Cut-off devices
Position of gas inlet, main electrical panel, emergency cut-off, water valves. Normalized pictograms. Critical information for firefighters during intervention.
General instructions
List of actions when alarm sounds: notify, alert, evacuate calmly, assembly point. Emergency numbers in large print: 18 (fire), 112 (European emergency), 15 (SAMU), 17 (police).
Legend
List of all pictograms used on the plan with their meaning. Also serves as compliance proof (each listed pictogram must have a recognized ISO 7010 code).
How to choose the right template for my ERP?
Template choice depends on 3 criteria: your ERP type (M, N, O, P, R, U, J...), its category (1-5 by occupancy), and physical configuration (single-level, multi-floor, multi-building).
Office Template (ERP type W or Labor Code)
For tertiary buildings, open-spaces, meeting rooms. Emphasize common spaces (break rooms, lobbies), staircases, elevators (forbidden during evacuation). Low occupant/m² ratio (~10 m² per workstation). Often category 4 or 5.
Retail Template (ERP type M, N, O)
For shops, supermarkets, restaurants. Focus on public zones (aisles, checkouts, dining hall) and staff zones (storage, kitchens). Type-specific compliance with French ERP regulations.
Industry Template (ERP type T or ICPE)
For factories, workshops, warehouses. Must integrate ATEX zones, technical rooms, chemical risk areas. ICPE compliance per applicable rubric (1510 warehouse, 4801 hazardous substances). Firefighter intervention plan generally required.
School Template (ERP type R)
For elementary, middle, and high schools. Adapt to reduced mobility (PSH included), distinguish zones by cycle, plan a remote assembly point. Quarterly drill mandatory in France (order of 13 January 2004).
Healthcare Template (ERP type U)
For hospitals, nursing homes, clinics. Major specificity: horizontal evacuation (rather than vertical) since occupants may be bedridden or have reduced autonomy. Compartmentation safe zones, bed-friendly corridors. Type U compliance.
Hospitality Template (ERP type O)
For hotels, B&Bs, lodges. Plan posted in each room (facing the door). Multilingual instructions if international clientele. Floor-differentiated emergency exits. Type O requires alarm type 1 if capacity > 20 rooms.
Customizing a template: 5 mistakes to avoid
1Keeping the template's "You are here" indicator
The red pictogram must be moved to the exact location where the plan is physically posted. A plan posted at reception with "You are here" pointing to the meeting room = unusable and non-compliant.
2Using non-ISO 7010 pictograms
Importing a pictogram from Google Images or hand-drawn loses compliance. All pictograms must have a valid ISO 7010 code and respect normalized Pantone colors.
3Forgetting to update after refurbishment
The plan must reflect the current layout. Moving a partition, adding a room or modifying a staircase makes the plan obsolete. The safety commission systematically rejects outdated plans.
4Printing in low resolution or wrong colors
The plan must be readable from at least 1 meter, with ISO 7010 colors respected (green RAL 6032, red RAL 3001, blue RAL 5005, yellow RAL 1003). Black-and-white or low-resolution printing invalidates compliance.
5Non-compliant posting
Plan must be posted at eye level (center ~1.60 m from floor), well lit even on emergency power (with BAES). Not behind tinted glass, not blocked by furniture or posters.
